Ukrainian Diaspora Olympiad - USCAK
in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

July 4-6, 2008

Congratulations to the Wings U19 Soccer Team, coached by Paul Kulas, who represented us well by participating and winning the gold medal in the U19 division. Paul assembled the best young talent in the Chicagoland area, which requires much time and effort. Many thanks go out to Paul, who put this all together, including ordering the bus, for the Chicago CYM/Wings teams.

Many thanks to the Wings 40 & over soccer players and the Kroc soccer players who came out and scrimmaged against our young squad of the U19 team. These scrimmages definitely helped as our Wings U19 team came up with victories that brought home the gold.

The first game was played on Friday July 4, 2008 against the home team favorites, Philadephia Tryzub Soccer Club. This game was played in a steady rain throughout the match and the Wings hung in there to win the game 1-0. Timely scoring from Taras Fafendyk and some good saves from Markian Popowycz preserved this upset win.

Next day's game was against the Toronto "Karpaty", which the Wings S.C. won handedly by a score of 7-0. The goals were scored by Nick Kulas(2), Taras Fafendyk, Daniel Zaparaniuk, Mark Kyzska, and John Derkacz(2). Markian Popowycz shut the door on the Canadians and recorded another shutout keeping his sheet clean, not allowing anyone to score on him the entire weekend.

Also, congratulations are in order to the rest of the Chicago representation. The young girls "Wings" volleyball team, coached by Bohdan Wruskyj, took 2nd place, losing to the Plast/Odum girls from Chicago. So, the Chicago girls went first and second in this category. The men's volleyball team also was well represented, as the Chicago Plast team finished in 2nd place.

All in all, Chicago was well represented and we should congratulate and encourage all our young Chicagoland sportsmen, sportswomen and coaches to continue to participate in these types of events.

The Wings girls volleyball Team:

Over the 4th of July weekend the Wings girls volleyball team traveled to Philadelphia, to participate in the Ukrainian Diaspora 2008 Olympiad, sponsored by Tryzub. This was the first competition for the newly formed Wings VB team. In the first round of the playoffs our young team faced a much more experienced Philadelphia squad and our girls went down in a tight first game 25-23. However, our girls came back fighting in the second game to win 25-21. Then, early in the third and deciding game, our team fell behind 8-5. But, after a team timeout the girls threw caution to the wind and rallied back to win this third and deciding game by a score of 15-11 (third games are played to 15 points). The team was now assured, at least, a silver medal but wanted the gold. They would have to beat a strong ODUM team to win the gold. The wings soccer team arrived, after winning the Gold Medal, just in time to cheer our girls on (just as the girls came out, in the rain, to cheer the soccer team on to a victory over Philadelphia). The first game against ODUM was a very hard fought game with the Wings losing by a score of 25-22. In the second game of the match, the Wings came out playing hard and took the lead a few times, but could not hold on to it, thus losing the game and the match by a score of 25-20. The Wings volleyball team came home with the Silver medal. The team showed great spirit and determination throughout the Olympiad. Both the Volleyball and the Soccer teams are representatives that Chicago CYM can be very proud of.

Volleybal team members are: Katia Fishchuk(2), Caitlin Hirota(13), Tania Jarmola(19), Marta Kryvdyk(17), Elyssa Kulas(14), Ulana Moroz(18), Kellie Ruiz(4), Melanie Ruiz (11), Alexandra Savoia(6), Olga Tymouch(8), Kristina Vatseba(5), Roksolana Zaderetskii(3), Bohdan Wruskyj - Coach, Michael Jarmola - Assistant Coach
