About CYM in Great Britain
SUM DO & SOME DON'T
The Ukrainian Youth Association (UYA or CYM in Ukrainian) is
a Ukrainian community organisation dedicated to the education of young Ukrainians.
So why join CYM... from summer camps to sports, CYM offers young
people the opportunity to learn about their culture, history as well part
in numerous educational activities. |

Summer
Camps
One of the most important events in the
CYM calendar is the summer camps organised each year at
Tarasivka
in Derbyshire: a chance to face the great outdoors, live in a
tent and meet new friends from around the country and from abroad.
|
Christian
Ethics CYM liaises closely with the Ukrainian
Catholic and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches, both of which are a
strong influence on Ukrainian culture. Moral obligation - such as respect
for other people, distinguishing between right and wrong -
are all part and parcel of CYM's message. |
Cultural
Activities CYM is renowned for dance groups,
choirs, bands, orchestras and even amateur dramatics. Such groups
often perform before Ukrainian and British audiences. Groups have also performed
all over Europe. Competition is intense at the annual regional
and national competitions organised by the National Committee.

Ukrainian
Traditions From "zabavy" (dances) to "koliada"
(carol singing), "pysanka" (Easter egg) painting to "vatra"(bonfire)
building, "hopak" dancing to "varenky" eating. CYM would not
be CYM without its intense promotion of Ukrainian traditions. It is these
pastimes which help give CYM that unique Ukrainian flavour.

You are not alone ! CYM
does not exist just in Great Britain. There are oseredky (sometimes far bigger
than the ones in Great Britain) in countries such as Canada, the United States,
Germany, France, Belgium and even as far afield as Argentina
and Australia.
With Ukraine now an independent country, the organisation has also
been revived there.
So, for the more adventurous amongst you, put yourself
in the picture. Join those that do and put yourself in the picture. |
Sports Programme
CYM actively promotes a variety of sporting activities. Football, volleyball,
rounders, aerobics, table tennis, athletics, swimming can usually be
catered for, whilst the summer camps organise sailing, orienteering
and abseiling.
