Bohdan Vitenko
- July 14, 2011

On July 14, 2011 the Vitenko family, the New York Ukrainian community, and the worldwide CYM family unexpectedly suffered the loss of Bohdan Vitenko, a true and faithful son of Ukraine. Death claimed him even as he prepared for a new and hopeful direction in his short but meaningful life: joining the Navy of his adopted country, the US.

After arriving in New York from his native Ternopil in Ukraine, 7-year-old Bohdan entered St. George School and the School of Ukrainian Studies, and joined the Ukrainian American Youth Association (CYM). From his earliest years he exhibited those qualities that over the years would so endear him to his friends, teachers, counselors, co-workers, and eventually his young charges in CYM. Continuing his studies at La Salle Academy and John Jay College of Criminal Justice, he also completed his 12 years of Ukrainian school and three years of CYM counselor training, all with excellent results. Modestly, calmly, good-naturedly, with not a trace of conceit, he revealed himself to be an assiduous student, a devoted son and brother, a stalwart athlete, a responsible counselor, a generous volunteer, an earnest patriot, and a loyal friend.

Dear friend, even in your all-too-short 21 years, by your innate goodness and positive example you brought a ray of sunshine and warmth into all the lives you intersected. Those of us who earn a future in Paradise will someday meet you there again.
