Metelyky Perform at Navy Pier and
The Museum of Science and Industry
December 2011

Metelyky, the older of the two children’s groups in the School of Ukrainian Folk Dance at CYM, performed at Navy Pier’s Winter Wonderfest on Sunday, December 19, 2011, and at The Museum of Science and Industry’s “Christmas Around the World” on Friday, December 23, 2011.

Sonya Arko Shidenko, the school’s choreographer, wanted the young dancers to perform for audiences outside of the Ukrainian community, and knew of several Christmas venues that welcomed folk dance performances. Although Navy Pier usually wants large groups to perform several pieces, when working to secure the performance opportunity, Shidenko told them that CYM also had an adult choir who could share the time slot with the dance group. On the day of the performance, the choir performed first, singing several koliadky and shchedrivky, in both English and Ukrainian. Then Metelyky took the stage and performed “Village Dance,” a Ukrainian folk dance that they learned during their first year at the dance school. Although they were quite nervous to perform at an unfamiliar venue, they were very excited, and performed well. Afterwards, they and their families enjoyed the rest of the day at the festival.

Metelyky performed at the Museum of Science and Industry’s “Christmas Around the World” without the choir. This was their second opportunity to perform for a non-Ukrainian audience and on an unfamiliar stage. Again, they performed very well, which Shidenko credits to the girls’ work ethic. They practice diligently, and even practice at home. They are so young, but still dedicated to dancing and they always want to do their best.

Metelyky will next perform “Village Dance” at CYM’s annual Yalynka, which will take place on Sunday, January 29th. The piece will then go into retirement while the group prepares to learn a new dance for CYM’s annual Selo Fest which this year will take place on May 19, 2012.
