Ukrainian Genocide Remembrance September 19, 2010
On Sunday, September 19, 2010, members of the Ukrainian community gathered at St. Joseph the Betrothed Ukrainian Catholic Church in Chicago to remember the 10,000,000 victims of the 1932-1933 genocide in Ukraine with a memorial service and candlelit vigil. After the service a ceremonial procession was made around the outskirts of the church with a remembrance wreath at the forefront, on which organizations attached black ribbons in a show of solidarity. This year the vigil was especially of importance with the current regime’s insistence that the Holodomor was not genocide and its subsequent removal from Ukraine’s presidential web page.
