Fire
On Wednesday 2nd February 2005 at 15.40 a fire broke out at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Manchester where CYM conducts all its activities every week.
Unfortunately, inspite of the best efforts of ten fire engines the fire engulfed the whole hall and part of the old building next to it was damaged too. Thankfully nobody was hurt. By some miracle the store rooms containing all the ukrainian folk-dance costumes belonging to the oseredok's dance group Podilya were saved. Also saved were the costumes of the Manchester based dance ensemble Orlyk.
On Thursday 3rd February the chief engineer from Manchester City Council inspected the remains of the hall and declared it unsafe and arranged a demolition order to be carried out immediately. The cause of the fire has not yet been established and the investigation continued.
On Friday 4th February demolition of the hall began.
The emblem from Manchester oseredok's flagpole was found in the rubble by our holova Ewhen Kochan who took the risk to retrieve it for us, so that it can be used when we make a new flag.
Sumivtsi cameevery day to help salvage as much of the oseredok's proerty as possible. Even our sumenyata played their part.
