Commemoration of the Great Famine
On Saturday 27th November 2004 the ukrainian community in Manchester gathered together at the Ukrainian Catholic Church for a commemoration service for the victims of the Great Famine. All the ukrainian community organisations were represented and in front of the altar with their flags, the ukrainian national flag and the flag of OUN they paid their respects. The members of the Ukrainian Youth Association in Manchester prepared a commemorative programme and after the requiem service they read poetry in ukrainian and in english.
Not only did they remember the victims of the Great Famine in Ukraine more than 70 years ago but also the victims of injustice in Independance Square and all over Ukraine today. The Ukrainian Youth Association branch committee took the initiative and distributed orange ribbons to all the participants who came to church and took the opportunity to pray for a successful "Orange Revolution". Ukrainians in Manchester wanted to show their support for democrañy and political freedom in Ukraine and for Victor Yuschenko. the opposition presidential candidate. Fr.Yaroslaw Rij led special prayers for honest and just elections in Ukraine and for God's blessing for the ukrainian nation and Victor Yuschenko.
