November 26, 2005 was the first time Ukraine paid respect to the victims of political repression and
Holodomor of 1932-1933 on a national level. The Ukrainian community in Calgary commemorates this tragedy
annually with a religious service at the Holodomor monument followed by a commemorative program. Sumivtsi
are among those who faithfully participate in this annual commemoration on the last Saturday of November.
This year was no exception. Fathers Podzyk and Harahuc led the prayer service at the monument. Municipal
representatives were among those present. UCC President, Michael Ilnycky stressed the importance of never forgetting
the tragic events of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
Wreaths were placed at the monument by various Ukrainian organizations and groups. The vinok from CYM was placed
by our president Christine Musienko. The service concluded with the singing of both the Canadian and Ukrainian anthems.
The Holodomor commemoration continued at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre, where a "hungry lunch" (broth and bread) was served,
followed by a short program
