Commemoration of Women-Heroines
On the first Saturday of spring, our CYM branch took part in a commemorative gathering to pay respect to
the women-heroines of Ukraine. These women were dedicated to, and gave their lives in, the fight for
the freedom and independence of Ukraine.
The main speaker was Oksana Dawid, president of the Calgary branch of League of Ukrainian Women in
Canada. She spoke of the heart-breaking hardships these women endured as mothers, sisters and wives of
our heroes. In particular, she read the memoirs of Stepan Bandera's sister, as well as those of the
wife and sisters of Roman Shukhevych.
Poems were read which were written by our women in soviet
concentration camps.
The audience, consisting of members of LUC, LUCW, CYM and guests, were captivated by the speaker.
Following the formal program, a short film about the history of LUC was shown.
Maria Shysh encouraged the audience to participate in the postcard campaign regarding the publicly
funded Canadian Museum of Human Rights. This action is aimed towards having appropriate representation
of the Ukrainian Famine-Holodomor of 1932-1933 in this "inclusive" museum.
