Sviato Mychaila
In November we celebrate the Patron Saint of the Ukrainian Youth Association, and of all sumivtsi around
the world, St. Archangel Michael. CYM Calgary marked this Feast with a formal gathering in our uniforms
at a sviatochyy apel'led by podruha Marusia.
Following the opening prayer by our chaplain Father Serhiy, podruha Marusia spoke about CYM Canada's 60
anniversary and its significance. With this, she presented all the youth with commemorative pins for the
anniversary. For those fortunate enough to be a part of the All-Canadian Mandrivnyy Camp in the Maritimes
this past summer, this anniversary was well celebrated. Photos can be seen on our website on cymnet.
This formal gathering of sumivtsi made for the perfect occasion to welcome our newest members as they took
their oaths. On this day they plegded their faithfulness to God and Ukraine. We welcomed two new adult
members, druzhynnyky, as well as Anya who completed the the youth program and also became a full-fledged
CYM member.
Youth who progressed from moloshe to starshe yunatstvo also made their pledges, as did sumenyata who now have entered
the ranks of molodshe yunatstvo. The pledged to be good children and well-behaved sumivtsi.
Father Serhiy then spoke to us about St. Michael, our patron saint, the history of His battle for truth
and faithfulness. Ukrainians have always had a deep symbolic understanding of the battle between good
and evil, truth and lies, fairness and tyranny. This is the basis of our CYM ideals, to place God before
all things, to lead us in morality, ethics and faith and in the protection of Ukraine as part of God's
Kingdom on earth.
To conclude our ceremony, we all sang the National anthem of Ukraine and took a group photo as a keepsake of this day.
