Commemoration
On November 24, sumivtsi from Calgary joined the rest of the Ukrainian nation in mourning the victims of the Holodomor 1932-1933.
Our starshe yunatsvo began preparing for this solemn occasion at the start of November. Recalling that the weather is usually not
favorable to be outside at the Holodomor Monument, we decided to make a replica of the one in Kyiv on Mykhajlivska Ploshcha.
Also getting ready was our sumivka, Ann Zalucky. In her opening remarks as emcee of the Holodomor Commemoration, she defined the
word holod in both English and Ukrainian and described the horrific events of 1932-1933 in Ukraine.
A memorial service was conducted by Rev. Taras Krochak and our branch chaplain,
Rev. Serhiy Harahuc.
Following the laying of wreaths by the many Ukrainian organizations and individuals, officials from the provincial and municipal
governments expressed their condolences and sentiments.
At the conclusion of the Holodomor Commemoration, our Sumivtsi served a so-to-speak "Hungry Lunch".
