Well, one common misconception is that Kolob is a planet. In the Book of Abraham, Kolob is never a planet, but a star. Lots of Egyptologists have studied this (I highly recommend the writings of Hugh Nibley if you ever want to go really deep into this topic), and found that the most likely star that the ancient Egyptians called Kolob is the one we call Sirius today.
